Why it's a good idea?
Problem & audience
- ~8% of men (~350 M worldwide) have some form of colour-vision deficiency (CVD). Whenever they apply for driving licences, navy/airline, electrical jobs or when designers want an accessibility badge they need to know the exact subtype (protan/deutan/tritan) and severity. A calibrated test normally requires visiting an optometrist (HRR, Farnsworth-Munsell, Rabin CCT, CAD) or buying a $60–$400 plate set.
- Multiple Reddit /r/ColorBlind threads ("what is the best colorblind test" 5 y, "Cone contrast test" July 2024, "Modern color blind test" May 2023) show recurring demand for accurate, at-home tests and complaints that online tests give inconsistent results due to monitor gamut.
- HackerNews item 43699215 (Jul 2024) where a user explicitly asked for such a tool got >20 up-votes and discussion about the need for calibrated spectra – evidence that tech-savvy people are looking for something better than pure-screen tests.
